High Definition Wedding Video – Blu-ray, Apple TV, Hard Drive, USB, Oh My!

Planning for the wedding of your dreams is the first step, but having a luxury wedding video to help remember the fond wedding day memories and share them with others is crucial. So once your wedding has been captured on video, there are a few options on how to receive and store your memories. Here are a few examples that can help you make the right choice.

Streaming over the Internet: This is a popular form of video delivery and is widely used everyday. Youtube, Vimeo, and Facebook are just a few of the popular sites that allow video streaming. The advantages are that the video is delivered at top quality and can be watched online, and even downloaded and stored on your computer. This form of delivery is great for those clients with broadband internet access, and who want to share their video online via Facebook, email, etc.

Blu-Ray Disc: This is currently considered the best, highest quality form of watching high definition video from a disc. Blu-Ray players are affordable, and offer the advantage of being able to watch your wedding video on your big screen plasma or LCD TV. We highly recommend this type of disc over the traditional DVD, which is only for standard definition video.

USB or Hard Drive: Yes, believe it or not, you can watch your wedding video right on your television directly from a USB or portable hard drive. How, you ask? Some of the newer television models have USB ports built directly into the side of the television. So, all you need to do is plug in your USB storage device or portable hard drive, and voila. What if you have an older TV without one of these connections? There are devices available at your local electronics store that allows you to do the same. Ask your wedding videographer about some of these options that include Apple TV, Sony media player, or Western Digital media player.

Now that you have your wedding video, what is the best means of storing it?

Hard Drive: If you have a digital copy of your wedding video as well as a Blu-ray or DVD disc, you’ll need a way to store it. Keeping your wedding video on the hard drive of your computer also has a few advantages. It means you can access and readily stream your video to others over the internet and even post it on YouTube or other video servers. The problem is what do you do if the hard drive crashes? Even the best, most reliable computers can crash and take your wedding video down with it. So, it is best to keep your video stored on you main drive of your computer, and an external hard drive for security purposes.

Equipment & Technology – Volume 2

In this edition of equipment & technology, I want to touch on some of the tools that we utilize to capture some of the beautifully stunning shots used in our wedding films. Just as the case with wedding photography, an artistic wedding videographer will use different lenses to capture different situations during the wedding day.

A “fisheye” is a wide-angle lens that takes in an extremely wide, hemispherical image, adding a very unique perspective and artistic approach to our wedding films. As you can see in the images below, the fisheye lens accentuates curves and adds a beautifully different perspective to an otherwise standard shot.

As with anything else, these types of shots should be used in moderation, and should only be used to enhance the story and beauty of the wedding day. Nothing makes up for an artistic eye, great camera work, and an unparalleled storytelling ability, but when all of that is already in place… a videographer should use the tools that are out there to help enhance their clients’ wedding video production. Hope this was helpful, and if you missed our last installment of equipment and technology, check out Volume 1 here, where we showcase the “Glidecam,” for those smooth movie-like gliding shots.

10 Best Things About the New iPhone 3G

I just picked up my new iPhone yesterday and I have to say that I love it! I was a former user of the Palm Treo series of smartphones owning the Treo 650 followed by the Treo 750. I am not a huge Apple fan, in fact we edit on a PC not a Mac, neither Denise nor I even own an iPod, and I passed on the first series of the iPhone that was released last July. Nevertheless, I bought into the hype so here we go with my 10 best things about the new iPhone.

1. Google Maps with GPS
2. Safari Internet Browser
3. Amazing Touchscreen Interface
4. Visual Voicemail
5. YouTube Videos
6. Built in Ipod (of course)
7. Wi-Fi
8. 2.0 Megapixel Camera
9. App Store (With Lots of Free Apps!)
10. Plays Videos and has great built in speakers (Even Wedding Videos!)

Equipment & Technology – Volume 1

I am going to be starting a monthly thread for those of our readers who are interested in the tools of the trade. We will pick out a piece of equipment or technology that we utilize at Absolute Media Productions that helps set us apart from the competition, allowing Absolute Media Productions to create some of the most artistic, intimate, and elegant wedding videos in Philadelphia & New Jersey. Now, please don’t get me wrong, as Denise would tell me, it is the emotions of the day and the ability of the videographer to tell the story that makes an exceptional wedding video. I agree with that… but without the right equipment & mastery of the technology, the story wouldn’t be conveyed quite as effectively.

For Volume 1 of this series, we will be focusing on smooth gliding shots, where the camera appears to float through the air. This technique is used all over TV and the movies, but not utilized by many videographers who shoot weddings. It requires a special piece of equipment that is used for stabilization, and we use the Glidecam 4000 Pro. It adds the movie like feel to our productions, and creates more visually stunning videos. I think every wedding videographer should not only own a Glidecam or similar stabilization device, but it should be used on every shoot. It is fairly small and unobtrusive, and offers the videographer the ability to get beautifully stunning and professional shots that otherwise would not have been possible.

Please check out some of our sample films on the blog, and see for yourself how the Glidecam enhances the quality of the production. Here is a link to a formal photo session coverage that we did with use of the Glidecam. Enjoy!
