Wedding Photography Trends – Part One
This is part one of a three part series showcasing the hottest new trends from some of the hottest wedding photographers in the tri-state! In part one, we are featuring
Kelly Guenther Wedding Photojournalist, who is breaking new ground in a dramatic fashion with her signature “studio photo booth.”
A black backdrop with high fashion studio lighting is set up at the reception, where Jake Price, award winning photojournalist and portrait photographer, photographs the wedding guests throughout the night. These photos are then projected in a slideshow that is constantly updated with new photos. This is a huge crowd pleaser, as the guests love every minute of it… often the studio becomes the place to hang out at the party. The photos get more and more interesting as the night goes on. All the photos are available online, and each guest receives a card with a link to the site after they leave. I asked Jake about his inspiration and philosophy regarding wedding photography, and this is what he had to say.
“Apart from my journalistic influences I’ve been inspired by photographers such as Iriving Penn who captured form and grace so discreetly while also holding onto a humanity and sense of ease in his subjects. He was of a different time, of course, when elegant fashion was more a part of our culture. One of the places where this kind of elegance survives is at weddings. My philosophy is that people put a lot of refined effort into looking remarkable. When I succeed, my photography preserves that urbanity while still not loosing track of the intimate and light moments that occur during the event. The trick is to bring it all into my little ‘studio’ and within a couple of minutes distill it into a lasting photograph.”
I believe the aspect that makes Kelly’s “studio photo booth” so unique, is the added guest interaction and participation. It offers more entertaining options for those guests who normally do not dance, or for guests to enjoy in addition to dancing. It is a great way to get everyone involved in the fun at the reception. Jake also mentions, “often the couple who is getting married asks me to photograph everyone who is attending their wedding, which is always a challenge. Because of logistics, usually that’s done when people are at tables, after they’ve eaten and before they dance. I never liked this setting. I thought it was a waste to photograph people here because its a cluttered setting with all the tables, chairs, plates and glasses lying around. Meanwhile, the guests always look so good, they make such a refined effort to dress up, so I thought I had to have an equally elegant way to photograph them. I needed an addition to my journalistic approach.”
